Background of the Study
Patient compliance, or adherence to prescribed treatments and medical advice, is an essential factor in ensuring the success of healthcare interventions. Non-compliance to treatment regimens can lead to prolonged illness, increased healthcare costs, and negative health outcomes. One of the strategies to improve patient compliance is through health education, which aims to increase patients' understanding of their medical conditions, treatment options, and the importance of following prescribed instructions. Health education is particularly crucial in regions like Kano State, Nigeria, where there may be limited access to healthcare information, and misconceptions about healthcare practices are common.
In Kano State, where healthcare resources are often scarce and the population is diverse with varying levels of health literacy, health education can significantly influence patients' attitudes towards treatment adherence. Hospital-based health education initiatives, including counseling, community outreach programs, and informational materials, are critical tools in enhancing patient compliance. However, despite the known benefits of health education, many healthcare institutions in Kano State have yet to fully integrate systematic health education into their patient care protocols.
This study will examine the role of health education in improving patient compliance in hospitals in Kano State, focusing on the types of health education strategies used, their effectiveness, and how they can be optimized to achieve better health outcomes.
Statement of the Problem
Patient non-compliance remains a significant challenge in hospitals in Kano State, resulting in ineffective treatment, worsening health conditions, and higher healthcare costs. While health education has been identified as a key factor in improving patient compliance, many hospitals in the state struggle to implement comprehensive and effective health education programs. This study seeks to investigate the role of health education in improving patient compliance and identify the barriers that hinder the effective delivery of health education in hospitals in Kano State.
